Celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn ‘00 helped feed over five thousand people per day at the Capitol

Spike Mendelsohn, a non-graduate who attended Farragut two years with the class of ‘00, is a successful Washington D.C. chef and restaurateur who owns several top eateries in the D.C. area. Mendelsohn became a celebrity chef after placing fifth in the TV show Top Chef in 2008.

This past January, Mendelsohn’s pizzeria, WE, THE PIZZA, donated hundreds of pies to feed the National Guard, police, and first responders who were working to protect the Capitol leading up to the Presidential Inauguration. 

Along with his own restaurant, Mendelsohn partnered with over 25 local D.C. restaurants to also provide meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Donations came pouring in from all over the U.S. to support the cause; a true blessing during this tough time for restaurant survival.  

“It’s been completely overwhelming in the best possible way,” Mendelsohn stated. “We provided restaurants with money that supplies the food.

Mendelsohn believes strongly in giving back to his community and has also been heavily involved in helping the homeless. Over the years he has partnered with DC Central Kitchen and Food Rescue US, two organizations that work to feed the homeless each day and provide culinary job training. He also collaborates with restaurants across the nation to be at the forefront to help solve the national crisis of homelessness.
