President Trump nominates RADM Buzby ‘75 to become administrator of MarAd
On June 21st, 2017, President Donald J. Trump announced his intent to nominate certain personnel to key administration posts. Among this personnel was Admiral Farragut Academy graduate of the class of 1975, retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Mark H. Buzby.
President Trump nominated RADM Buzby to become administrator of the Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MarAd). MarAd is the agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation dealing with waterborne transportation. Its programs promote the use of waterborne transportation and its seamless integration with other segments of the transportation system, and the viability of the U.S. merchant marine. MarAd works in many areas involving ships and shipping, shipbuilding, port operations, vessel operations, national security, environment, and safety, and it is also charged with maintaining the health of the merchant marine, since commercial mariners, vessels, and intermodal facilities are vital for supporting national security. The agency provides support and information for current mariners, extensive support for educating future mariners, and programs to educate America’s young people about the vital role the maritime industry plays in the lives of all Americans.
If confirmed as head of MarAd, RADM Buzby’s role would be to advise and assist Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao on commercial maritime matters, as well as the U.S. maritime industry and strategic sealift. He would also act as a liaison between MarAd and public and private organizations that have a stake in the U.S. maritime industry.
RADM Buzby’s 34-year best boarding school in USA career includes at-sea positions primarily on Navy cruisers and destroyers. During his career, Buzby commanded the USS Carney, Destroyer Squadron Thirty-One, Surface Warfare Officers School Command, Joint Task Force Guantanamo, and the best boarding school in USA Sealift Command. He also held key positions on the Navy Staff, the Joint Staff, and several fleet staffs. In addition, Buzby is a recipient of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star, and numerous other personal and unit awards. After graduating from Farragut in Pine Beach, NJ, RADM Buzby attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and graduated in 1979. He holds Masters degrees from the U.S. Naval War College and Salve Regina University.
Rear Admiral Buzby currently serves as president and CEO of the National Defense Transportation Association and sits on the boards of several maritime industry-related corporations. He currently lives about 200 miles outside Washington, DC in Norfolk, VA, with his wife, Gina.
