Students give back to their community in many different ways

This past weekend students gave back to their community. One group of students participated in a trash clean up, another spent time at a retirement community, members of the color guard presented the colors at a local St. Petersburg event, Ribfest, and Lower School students donated goods to the Ronald McDonald House.

15 students and three teachers participated in the BLUE Ocean Grand Community Clean Up, partnered with the USF College of Marine Science, Canterbury School, Lakewood High School, Scubanauts International, and Keep Pinellas Beautiful. This is the second time our school has participated. The volunteers picked up a total of 214 pounds of trash in 3 hours. Admiral Farragut Academy picked up the most as an individual group, with 71 pounds of debris along the Clam Bayou trail in only 2 hours! Thank you to all. View more pictures.

Also on Saturday, four students who are members of the Service Club spent their Saturday afternoon volunteering at Westminster Suncoast, a retirement community in St. Petersburg. While there they bonded and played bingo with the residents!

Our color guard also represented Admiral Farragut Academy at Ribfest, a local food and concert festival in Vinoy Park.

Lower School collected and donated paper goods to the Ronald McDonald House Charities which serves children and families around the world through family-centered programs which promote health, healing, and togetherness.

Lower School is also collecting stockings and small items to send to the servicemen and women living in the same building as 7th grader Tyler Turner’s dad. They are hoping to have 30 stuffed stockings to ship after Thanksgiving. The collection will run until November 18th, the day before Thanksgiving Break. NJHS is going to help stuff the stockings ready for shipment in the week that we return. On December 2nd, anyone who has contributed may wear jeans.

The Upper School Red Cross Club has been collecting donations for measles and rubella vaccinations – every $1.50 goes to vaccinating a child in another country. All those who donate receive a pin from the Red Cross as a “thank you.” So far they have raised about $200!
