Two female wrestlers competed at the 2021 Women’s Wrestling National Championship
Admiral Farragut Academy student-athletes, Maeve Case ’22 and Riley Lancaster ’26, took their wrestling to a national stage this past weekend.
Both ladies traveled to Irving, Texas, to compete in the 2021 Women’s Wrestling National Championships. The girls were accompanied and coached by Farragut BlueJackets Wrestling Coach Tony LoRusso and his daughter and Farragut alumnus Angela LoRusso ’19, a current women’s wrestler at Adrian College.
Thousands of young ladies aged 8-23 came from all over the country and competed in this year’s tournament. Maeve and Riley both got five quality matches throughout the weekend and grew tremendously as wrestlers with this experience. Maeve posted up her first national championships win, pinning her opponent from Maine in the Cadet 53 kg Division.
During the trip, Maeve and Riley were also invited to warm up with the Adrian College Women’s Team and enjoyed a full weekend of high-level, quality wrestling. Many Olympic-level wrestlers were on hand coaching, competing, and interacting with fans, including USA Wrestling World Team member Forrest Mollinari. The girls also got to meet Mixed Martial Arts star, Holly Holm.
Women’s Wrestling continues to be the fastest-growing high school sport in the country, with over 30,000 girls now training and competing. This upcoming season the Florida High School Athletic Association added women’s wrestling to the State Series Championships. Maeve and Riley will continue their offseason training, along with Grace Vernine ‘24, to build off this experience and work towards next season’s goals.
